Esse artigo discute mediações teóricas importantes na compreensão dos novos padrões de estruturação das metrópoles latino-americanas, enfocando o potencial analítico de dois conceitos da Geografia Urbana: segregação socioespacial e fragmentação urbana. As reflexões apoiam-se em revisão de literatura e na análise empírica de uma metrópole em particular (Fortaleza-CE), que apresenta mudanças significativas em sua estrutura espacial. Conclui-se que o processo real que comanda a estruturação das metrópoles latino-americanas é atravessado simultaneamente pela segregação (superpondo e misturando os padrões fractal e centro-periferia) e pela fragmentação espacial (nas dimensões físico-material, sociopolitico espacial e funcional).
Abstract
SEGREGATION OR FRAGMENTATION SOCIOSPATIAL? NEW STRUCTURING STANDARDS OF LATIN AMERICAN METROPOLISES
This paper discusses important theoretical mediations in understanding the new structuring standards of Latin American metropolises, focusing on the analytical potential of two concepts in Urban Geography: sociospatial segregation and urban fragmentation. The reflections are based on literature review and empirical analysis of a metropolis in particular (Fortaleza-CE), which presents significant changes in their spatial structure. We conclude that the actual process that commands the structuring of Latin American metropolises is crossed by segregation (superposing and mixing fractal and center-periphery standards) and the spatial fragmentation (in the physical-material, socio-political spatial and functional dimensions).
