A emergência do futebol, enquanto prática social fortemente enraizada em nossa sociedade, vem suscitando importantes inquietações tanto no âmbito das atividades acadêmicas dos cientistas sociais, quanto no fazer cotidiano dos professores de Educação Física, de modo que as reflexões que vêm se articulando acerca da relação futebol x sociedade ganham relevo no Brasil a partir da década de 90 e se fortalecem até os dias atuais. O presente artigo tem como objetivo central apresentar um passeio teórico sobre as principais contribuições, no âmbito das Ciências Sociais, para a compreensão do futebol, e uma análise histórica sobre a sociogênese do futebol e suas particularidades intrínsecas, assumidas no decorrer do processo histórico de mudanças das sociedades que sustentaram a prática desse esporte.Palavras-chave: futebol; Ciências Sociais.AbstractThe emergency of the soccer, while practical social strong taken root in our society, comes in such a way exciting important fidgets in the scope of the academic activities of the social scientists how much in daily making of the professors of Physical Education, in way that the reflections that come if articulating concerning the relation soccer x society gain relief in Brazil from the decade of 90 and come if fortifying until the current days. The present article has as objective central office to present a theoretical stroll on themain contributions, in the scope of Social Sciences, for the understanding of the soccer, and a historical analysis on social genesis of the soccer and its intrinsic particularitities, assumed in elapsing of the historical process of changes of the societies that had supported the use of this sport.Keywords: soccer; Social sciences.
