RESUMO:Este artigo discute a importância da relação campo-cidade no âmbito da dinâmica populacional, tendo como enfoque a Microrregião de Varginha, Sul de Minas Gerais. A definição de espaço urbano no Brasil é muito simplista, pois restringe-se a elementos materiais ligados à infraestrutura, assim como, dá as administrações municipais o poder para delimitar o que será espaço urbano e espaço rural. Nesse sentido, o estudo teve como objetivo verificar a ruralidade local a partir do contexto socioespacial. Para tanto, recorreu-se a levantamentos de dados e informações do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística sobre a população, quanto a densidade demográfica, população economicamente ativa agrícola, além de dados a respeito da produção agropecuária regional. Como resultado, evidenciou-se que 10, dos 16 municípios da Microrregião de Varginha, apresentam população inferior de 20 mil habitantes com forte ligação com as atividades agropecuárias, e 14 deles apresentam densidade demográfica inferior a padrões considerados urbano pela OCDE.Palavras-chave: Cidades Pequenas; Cidade Média; Análise Regional; Ruralidade.ABSTRACT:This article discusses the importance of the field-city relationship in the population dynamics, focusing on the Microregion of Varginha, Southern Minas Gerais. The definition of urban space in Brazil is very simplistic, as it is restricted to material elements linked to infrastructure, as well as giving municipal administrations the power to delimit what will be urban space and rural space. In this sense, the study aims to verify the local rurality from the socio-spatial context. To do so, we used data and information surveys of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics on population, demographic density, economically active population, and data on regional agricultural production. It- was evidenced that of 10, of the 16 municipalities of the Varginha Microregion, they have a population of less than 20 thousand inhabitants with a strong connection to farming activities, and 14 have a population density lower than the urban OECD standards.Keywords: Small City; Middle Town; Regional Analysis; Rurality.
