Abstract

Tibouchina herbacea (DC.) Cog. é uma planta ornamental introduzida propositadamente no arquipélago do Havaí e, devido à ausência de inimigos naturais e condições edafo-climáticas adequadas, está se dispersando rapidamente pelas florestas nativas e regiões úmidas das principais ilhas havaianas. Por ser originária do Brasil, foram realizadas diversas viagens exploratórias em busca de por inimigos naturais específicos que pudessem controlar esta planta. Dentre os agentes selecionados com impacto e potencial de especificidade à T. herbacea encontra-se Syphraea uberabensis (Bechyne, 1955 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Este trabalho visa estudos sobre a biologia, ecologia e especificidade deste inseto e também uma avaliação criteriosa dos possíveis impactos causados por este inimigo natural na população da planta.ABSTRACT Tibouchina herbacea (DC.) Cog. is an ornamental plant introduced purposefully in the Hawaiian archipelago and due to the absence of natural enemies and adequate soil and climate conditions, it has spread in many native forests and humid regions of the main Hawaiian Islands. As the plant is originally from Brazil, it has been made several exploratory trips in order to search for specific natural enemies to control this plant. Among the selected agents with impact and potential for specificity to T. herbacea, the most effective is Sypharea uberabensis (Bechyne, 1955 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). This work presents studies about the biology, the ecology and the specificity of this insect and also an evaluation of the possible impacts caused by this natural enemy in the population of the plant.
