O ritmo da criação de municípios no Brasil variou do período colonial à República, no tempo e no seu vasto território. Contudo, foi na República que se verificou grande crescimento absoluto das municipalidades brasileiras. Duas constituições federativas se destacaram como “municipalistas”, a de 1946 e a de 1988, e elas contribuíram para a ocorrência dos principais surtos emancipacionistas do período republicano. O objetivo desta pesquisa é, portanto, trazer à baila os principais fatores que contribuíram para o incremento do número de municípios brasileiros durante a República, e analisar as suas motivações, vantagens e desvantagens após a Constituição Federal de 1988. The rhythm of the creation of municipalities in Brazil varied from the colonial period to the Republic, in time and in its vast territory. However, it was in the Republic that there was a great absolute growth of the Brazilian municipalities. Two federal constitutions stood out as “municipalists”, 1946 and 1988, and they contributed to the occurrence of the main emancipationist outbreaks of the republican period. The purpose of this research is to bring to light the main factors that contributed to the increase in the number of Brazilian municipalities during the Republic, and to analyze their motivations, advantages and disadvantages after the Federal Constitution of 1988.
