O objetivo principal do trabalho é apresentar uma leitura alternativa dos espaços subterrâneos como uma contribuição para a Espeleologia, no sentido de compreender as cavernas a partir de seus significados e representações. O artigo constrói duas imagens sobre o mundo subterrâneo baseadas em temporalidades distintas: o antes e o depois de um grupo de pessoas visitar a caverna Olhos d’Água, na cidade de Castro, Paraná, Brasil. As visitas foram monitoradas pelo Grupo Universitário de Pesquisas Espeleológicas e realizadas entre Setembro de 2009 e Maio de 2011. As representações foram coletadas pelo método da associação livre. Cento e oitenta e quatro indivíduos anotaram a primeira palavra relacionada à caverna (antes e depois da vivência) em um pequeno pedaço de papel, resultando em 368 evocações livres que foram sistematizadas por frequência de evocação e organizadas em eixos temáticos. A partir da experiência vivenciada tem-se o novo, uma nova relação sujeito-paisagem baseada na resignificação da própria imagem construída.Palavras-chave: Espeleologia cultural, Cavernas, Representações, Caverna Olhos d’Água. ABSTRACTThe main objective is this work is to present an alternative interpretation of underground spaces as a contribution to Speleology in order to understand the caves from its meanings and representations. The article builds two images of the underground based on distinct milestones: before and after a group of people enter the Olhos d’água cave, in the municipality of Castro, Paraná, Brazil. The visits were monitored by University Speleological Research Group (Grupo Universitário de Pesquisas Espeleológicas – G.U.P.E.) and conducted between September 2009 and May 2011. The representations were made by the method of free association. One hundred and eighty four individuals wrote down the first word related to the word cave in a small piece of paper, before and after entering the cave. The result was a number of 368 free evocations systematized by frequency and organized into themes. After this the authors discuss the fact that from the lived experience one can experience the new.
