Abstract

This word is related to a geomorphogical study of on area localized on the north shore of Patos ' Lagoon in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Thee main objetive was to understand its relief genesis with the aid of a systematic mapping of relief forms and field and laboratory control. The area presents two geomorphlogical unities thet compose the relief in regional level:the Uruguaio Sul riograndese Plateau and the Coastal Low Lands Plain. The Plateau correponds to convex topped hills of pre-cambriam crystalline roky struture and the plain is caracterized by lower relief forms whit hilly undulations and extremely low areas, constituted by essentially sandy sediments deposited during the quaternary period. The relief genesis in the study area began whit the emergence of hills that constituted real traps as they retaind the deposited sediments due to seal level variation. It also favoured sedimentation of the contiguous coastal plain. This plain is represented basically By two marine levels; the first corresponds to the sediments that support the hill forms and the second is formed by the beach ridge that isolated laggons during the Holocene. The geomorphological analysis allowed the recognition of relief varieties and the related process, trying to understand how they articulate to each other and how the great groups of relief formns evolve.
