José Veríssimo e a Proposta da Geografia Pátria na primeira República Brasileira vista através dos programas de Geografia do Gymnasio Nacional
Resumo
Abstract: This study is based on the essay written by one of the mos! important scholar of lhe end of the XIX century, the book critic José Veríssimo de Dias de Matos - “A Educação Nacional” (National Education). This essay, published in 1890, thefirst year of the republican rule in Brazil, was the most representative and important from the author’s pedagogical works. This study aims basically to analyze the proposal for implementation of the Nation Geography during the Brazilian First Republic, presented by Veríssinio in “A Educação Nacional” and investigate the proposal repercussion in the country context between 1892 and 1912, through the examination of the contents of the National Lower Secondary School Program, which was Brazil official education standard at that time. The study is divided in four parts. In the first part, using “biobibliographical” information, I emphasize the intellectual importance of Jose Veríssimo as well as his role in that period Brazilian cultural scene. The second part is dedicated to introduce National Education and National Geography. In the third, I discuss the National Lower Secondary School and the geography programs. Finally, in the fourth part, I analyze these programs in view of Verissimo’s proposals.
