Resumo O turismo é um tema que tem atraído nas últimas décadas a atenção de acadêmicos brasileiros de diferentes áreas em função do cada vez maior desempenho econômico das atividades relacionadas a esse importante fenômeno espacial. O presente trabalho busca apresentar algumas contribuições que a geografia pode oferecer aos estudos do turismo a partir de seu corpo teórico e metodológico. O objetivo principal dessa investigação científica é identificar se o turismo, atividade que predominantemente se destina a atender populações urbanas, pode de alguma forma conectar-se ao rural estimulando a produção agrícola e incorporando população rural. A localidade foi escolhida por ser uma área que no passado teve sua economia completamente vinculada à agropecuária e que a partir da década de 1970, passou por transformações que deslocaram o eixo econômico das atividades produtivas rurais para o turismo, que se tornou a principal atividade econômica da região. Abstract Tourism is a topic that has attracted the attention of Brazilian scholars of different areas in the last decades due to the increasing economic performance of the activities related to this important spatial phenomenon. The present work tries to present some contributions that the geography can offer to the studies of the tourism from its theoretical and methodological body. The main objective of this scientific research is to identify whether tourism, an activity that is predominantly intended to serve urban populations, can somehow connect with the rural, stimulating agricultural production and incorporating the rural population. The locality was chosen because it was an area that in the past had its economy completely linked to agriculture and that since the 1970s, underwent transformations that displaced the economic axis of rural productive activities for tourism, which became the main economic activity of region.
