O presente texto tem como objetivo central verificar as transformações geoeconômicas no município de Balsas (MA), partindo de dois elementos estruturantes da concepção La blachiana de região: o gênero de vida e a circulação. A região sul do Maranhão foi ocupada, no século XVIII, por vaqueiros que, juntamente com as condições naturais, originou uma estrutura econômica e social lastreada na pecuária extensiva. Essa estrutura foi de fundamental importância para a criação de núcleos urbanos e o desenvolvimento do comércio. Contudo, a partir de 1960, com o processo de modernização da agricultura brasileira, a pecuária cedeu espaço para a agricultura do arroz e a cadeia produtiva de soja. Essas duas novas estruturas produtivas implantadas pelos imigrantes, oriundos do Sul do Brasil, transformaram a cidade de Balsas em polo econômico regional. 

The present text has as main objective to verify the geoeconomic transformations in the municipality of Balsas (MA), starting from two structuring elements of the La blachiana conception of the region: the life style and the circulation. The southern region of Maranhão was occupied in the eighteenth century by cowherds who, along with natural conditions, originated an economic and social structure backed by extensive cattle ranching. This structure was of fundamental importance for the creation of urban nuclei and the development of commerce. However, since 1960, with the process of modernization of Brazilian agriculture, livestock has given way to rice farming and the soybean production chain. These two new productive structures implanted by the immigrants from the South of Brazil, transformed the city of Balsas into a regional economic pole.
