Identidade de lugar no Benfica: Distinção, discurso e divisão simbólica no bairro

Resumo

O presente artigo analisa a relação entre identidade social e identidade de lugar, enfocando o discurso que residentes do Benfica em Fortaleza-Ceará constroem do bairro e da área denominada Gentilândia, cuja descrição realiza-se com as atribuições de “mais tradicional e cultural” tanto para o local como para seus moradores. Assim, verifica-se como uma área urbana é diferencialmente valorizada através das representações que moradores criam de si e do bairro que ocupam, constituindo um limite e uma diferença entre habitantes e lugares.

PLACE INDENTITY IN BENFICA: DISTINCTION, DISCOURSE AND SYMBOLIC BORDERS WITHIN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

This paper analyses the relation between social identity and place identity. It focuses on the discourse built by the inhabitants of Benfica – a neighborhood in the city of Fortaleza-Ceará-Brazil – about their neighborhood and about the area called Gentilândia, which is considered to be more traditional and cultural in relation to the surrounding areas and their inhabitants. Thus, it is observed how an urban area is differentially valorized through representations which the inhabitants create of themselves and of the place they live in, drawing borders between inhabitants and places.
