HERÁLDICA E GEOGRAFIA (heraldry and geography)
Abstract
O artigo examina duas relações entre a heráldica e a geografia. A
primeira é que hoje o objeto principal da heráldica, os brasões, servem
principalmente para simbolizar identidades territoriais, transmitindo a
visão que os seus autores e patrocinadores querem dar do território
representado pelo brasão. Outra utilidade é que a sua linguagem precisa e
rigorosa pode ser usada para descrever de maneira sintética as
configurações territoriais que aparecem em mapas e modelos gráficos.
Após ter definido a heráldica e analisado alguns exemplos de
brasões territoriais no Brasil e na França, o artigo destaca os seus
elementos relevantes para a análise geográfica, principalmente as
palavras que descrevem a estrutura dos brasões e podem ser transpostos
para mapas e modelos gráficos.

ABSTRACT
The
article examines two relationships between geography and heraldry. The
first is that today the main purpose of heraldry, coats of arms, are
used primarily to symbolize territorial identities, transmitting the
vision the authors and their sponsors want to give of the territory
represented by them. Another use is its precise and accurate language,
which can be used to describe briefly the territorial configurations
that appear on maps and graphical models. After defining heraldry and
analyzing some examples of coats of arms of territories in Brazil and
France, the article highlights its relevance for geographic analysis,
especially the words describing the structure of crests, which can be
transposed to maps and graphical models.

RESUME
L’article
examine deux relations entre héraldique et géographie. La première est
qu’aujourd’hui l’objet principal de l’héraldique, les blasons, servent
principalement à symboliser des identités territoriales, transmettant la
vision que leurs auteurs et commanditaires veulent donner du territoire
représenté par eux. Une autre utilisation est que sa langue précise et
exacte peut être utilisée pour décrire succinctement les configurations
territoriales qui apparaissent sur les cartes et modèles graphiques.
Après avoir défini l’héraldique et analysé quelques exemples de blasons
de territoires au Brésil et en France, l’article met en évidence sa
pertinence pour l’analyse géographique, en particulier les mots qui
décrivent la structure des blasons et peuvent être transposés aux cartes
et modèles graphiques.
