Resumo As mudanças nas relações sociedade-espaço colocaram em xeque as tradicionais divisões entre rural e urbano, cada vez mais indistintos, embora significativas diferenças persistam. Mas em que escala e até quando? Tentativas de acadêmicos e organizações oficiais para definir e delimitar as áreas urbanas e as rurais têm esbarrado em sérios problemas. Algumas vezes por que as distinções que estabeleceram mostraram-se arbitrárias, outras vezes por que superenfatizaram as diferenças entre essas duas partes/parcelas do espaço geográfico ou por que desconsideraram a diversidade do rural. Uma das abordagens atuais é perceber o rural e a ruralidade como construções sociais nas quais novas territorialidades são construídas e onde fronteiras precisas entre essas áreas (rurais e urbanas) ou características essenciais a elas atribuídas, não se constituem em objeto primordial de pesquisa. Pode ser observado que uma importante parte das urbanidades está dispersa nas áreas rurais. Os elementos obtidos nas abordagens atuais sugerem que uma outra dialética pode conduzir à ideia de "urbanidades no rural" considerando-as como manifestações em espaços híbridos nos quais urbano e rural interconectam-se e interagem em todas as formas de combinações. O objeto empírico é o Estado do Rio de Janeiro em seu interior, onde um intenso processo de urbanização tem lugar. Esse processo pode ser identificado em dois padrões: o primeiro toma a forma de múltiplos nós (cidades em redes locais), estrategicamente estabelecidas em regiões que polarizam. O segundo padrão (objeto central desta pesquisa) aparece formando eixos ao longo das principais rodovias que interconectam as cidades ligadas por eles. Esse processo complexo sinaliza uma crescente dissolução das distinções urbano-rurais e enfraquece os antagonismos pela presença e ação da metrópole do Rio de Janeiro sobre o território do estado e além dele. Abstract The changing relationship between space and society has rendered traditional rural/urban divisions increasingly indistinct, although significant differences remain, but in what scale and for how long? Attempts by academics and official organizations to define and delimit rural and urban areas have always run into problems, sometimes because the distinctions they have drawn have been rather arbitrary, sometimes because they have over-emphasized the differences between these two parts/parcels of the geographical space or because they have under-emphasized the diversity of the rural. One approach today is to see rural and rurality as social constructs in which new territorialities are built and precise boundaries around these areas or essential characteristics are not the only object of research. It can be argued that an important "slice" of contemporary urbanity can now be found in rural areas. The elements obtained in main approaches suggest that another dialectic may lead to the idea of "urbanities on rural areas" considering this ones as manifestations of hybrid spaces, in which the urban and rural intertwine and interact in all manners of combinations. The empirical object is Rio de Janeiro State in its hinterland where an intense process of urbanization takes place. That process may be identified in two main different patterns: the first one takes the form of multiple nodes (cities in networks) strategically scattered in regions that they polarize. The second pattern (central object of this research) appears forming axis along main roads that interconnect the localities linked by them. This complex process signalize to a growing dissolution of rural/urban distinctions and antagonisms weakened by the presence and action of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro over the state territory and over there. A COMPLEXA SIMULTANEIDADE DA INTEGRAÇÃO E DISTINÇÃO ENTRE O URBANO E O RURAL: RETOMANDO UM DEBATE NO ESPAÇO DE METROPOLIZAÇÃO NO ESTADO DO RIO DE JANEIRO
